Part of my job, in the early days of Hemlock & Heather, was to ride around Austin during the city’s bulk pickup events and scavenge for wood. I didn’t have a truck back then, so I would pile the back of my 4-Runner with just about anything I could find that was made of wood. I picked up everything: nightstands, dressers, siding, yardsticks, scrap pieces of wood. You name it. And when the inside filled up, I would pile stuff on top Jenga style, strap it all down, and head home with my bounty to unload and process it all.
It was a lot of work, but we found a lot of great stuff (and a few things I couldn’t bring myself to cut up and use in pieces). Occasionally we found decorations and furniture with different scenes painted on them. Rarer still, we would acquire something that had obviously been hand-painted by its former owner.
The one-of-a-kind pieces we were able to create out of these castaway objects were fun to design and make, but Kelley and I always lamented the fact that we couldn’t better preserve some of these vintage pieces in some way to be able to share them with a wider audience. That changed when we began to work with Miller IDS here in Austin this year.
We no longer scour the neighborhoods of Austin for wood, but we still keep our eyes out for unique stuff. Now, when we do stumble upon vintage decor and furniture, we are able to preserve those pieces and share them with you. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed finding them (and hunting for them!)
These are designed by Hemlock & Heather in Austin, Texas using 100% locally-sourced, reclaimed materials.
Choose from four options: Daisies, Rose, Forget-Me-Nots, and Hydrangeas
Because our pieces are made with reclaimed materials, some variation in color and character will occur. No two pieces will be exactly the same.
